Pan-Fried Apples

Apple picking happens in the fall and when fruits and vegetables are in their prime, it’s absolutely the best time to prepare and enjoy them. So when my CSA box of fruits and vegetables showed up on the steps this week, fried apples were in order over the weekend!

Start with 4 or 5 apples (I had a mixture of  Fuji and Pink Ladies) — wash and quarter these. Heat your skillet to medium and add 4 tablespoons of butter. When the butter is melted and shimmering, toss your apples in, stirring to coat. Once coated, I sprinkle with a pinch of salt and let them continue to cook, stirring occasionally as to not burn them.

Just when the apples are done to your liking, dust them with a little cinnamon (a little goes a long way). Toss to coat with the butter and allow them to cool slightly. Then serve warm.

This simple dish always takes me back to childhood when my mom or grandmother would serve a batch of fried apples along side some fresh eggs. The savory and sweet taste of warm apples makes me so happy for autumn. It’s apple season right now — why not enjoy all mother nature has to offer this time of year?
